From the Campaign Chair and Chair of the Campaign Executive Committee

Jack Owen
The Campaign for the University of Virginia has surpassed its $3 billion goal — a goal many said was beyond the University’s reach.

This remarkable achievement is the result of the hard work and extraordinary generosity of alumni, parents, faculty, administration and friends of the University: 224,972 donors, throughout this country and abroad, made gifts to the campaign. Of those, 102,879 were alumni; 2,619 were faculty and staff; and 29,462 were parents.

Success in this campaign has enabled the University to elevate and maintain its programs and facilities at the highest level. It helps assure that our University continues to attract and retain exceptional faculty and creates even greater opportunities for our students, who are among the best and brightest of their generation.

If ever there was a team effort, it was this campaign. I am grateful for the leadership of former President John T. Casteen III (Col ’65, Grad ’66, ’70) during the campaign’s early days and for President Teresa Sullivan’s unwavering support. To the Senior Vice President for University Advancement, Bob Sweeney — whose strategic vision formed the foundation of the campaign — I express my admiration and deepest appreciation. I thank the University’s outstanding development staff and each member of the Campaign Executive Committee who oversaw the campaign from start to finish, particularly the campaign’s two vice chairs — Everette Doffermyre (Col ’70, Law ’73) and John Nau (Col ’68). Their leadership, wisdom, generosity and perseverance were absolutely critical to our success.

To all who made gifts and to the countless volunteers who worked so hard for such a long time on this campaign, the University is deeply grateful. Because of your support, the University’s place among our nation’s finest educational institutions — public and private — remains secure.
