Parents Committee Enhances the Undergraduate Student Experience

Graduates JumpingIn 1980, a group of parents, recognizing the University’s need for expanded external support, formed the U.Va. Parents Committee at the University of Virginia. This volunteer group was established to administer gifts to the U.Va. Parents Annual Fund. Since its inception, the Parents Committee has enriched the undergraduate collegiate experience of all University students by allocating Parents Fund resources to support student life and organizations, safety and health, University traditions, diversity and parent resources. Selected examples of Parents Fund support during the Campaign include the following:

• Student send-off events held around the world for incoming first-year and returning students as well as their parents

• College Advising (COLA) seminars for first-year students that blend teaching and advising

• Gilbert J. Sullivan Scholarships for rising third-year students with financial need

• Second-Year Dinner Series that brings students and faculty together

• Days on the Lawn open houses for admitted students

• Lighting of the Lawn, now a University tradition observed every December

• U.Va. Libraries, which support the University’s educational and research mission

• Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in Student Health’s Office of Health Promotion

• University Career Services new job developer position
