For nearly 200 years, UVA has hosted the world’s preeminent faculty.
When the University first opened for classes in 1825, it featured eight professors who were regarded as leaders in their respective fields.
Today, UVA’s faculty members are regarded not only for their intellectual leadership, but for their drive and character. As researchers, they work passionately to advance our understanding of the world. As teachers, they exemplify integrity, challenging students to reach beyond easy answers.
As the University of Virginia approaches its bicentennial, we must address the fast-approaching generational transition: over the next several years, many of UVA’s best-known faculty will retire. During this period of change and opportunity, the University will seek to build upon its strengths.
With the support of alumni, parents, and friends, UVA will continue to recruit and retain researchers and teachers who are proven leaders in their fields—world-class scholars and visionaries whose work across disciplines will help fuel the great advances of the 21st century.
