UVA Clubs Promote Cavalier Connections
Cheering on the Hoos. Keeping up with news from Grounds. Networking with fellow alums. Getting the inside scoop on life as a First Year. Volunteering in your community. Wading in a cranberry bog?
Participants in UVA Club events—alumni, parents, current and prospective students, families, friends, and otherwise unaffiliated Cavalier sports fans—can do it all and more. Thanks to a global network of 700 alumni volunteers in more than 100 clubs (18 international), 20,000+ attendees connect to UVA and each other at 1,000 events annually.
These numbers have grown significantly since the pandemic ended. “Whether it’s total number of events, clubs being revitalized, or new volunteers, it’s been encouraging to see the uptick in engagement at home and abroad,” said Joshua Stuart (Col ’18, Ed ’22), director for UVA Clubs Global Network in the Office of Engagement in External Relations.
“The clubs did an exceptional job pivoting to online programming to keep Hoos connected during a period when people simply could not gather,” he added. “Clubs hosted an array of events from virtual wine tastings with Virginia wineries to alumni-led virtual yoga classes and painting sessions. It was remarkable to see the determination from our volunteers to make clubs even more valuable in terms of community.”
Volunteers continue to drive the success of UVA Clubs. “Our volunteers love sharing that UVA spirit and they do such an incredible service out of their love for the University. I think that speaks to student self-governance,” said Stuart. “That’s the UVA way and it extends to our club volunteers. You learn that as a student, and you depart with that as an alum. That’s the secret sauce that makes it all work.”
Behind those volunteers are a team of staff ready to support them. “We’re always working to make the process for our volunteers more seamless, more efficient, and more effective to make their experience as club leaders even better,” Stuart said.

One way staff partner with local club volunteers is by assisting them with Signature Programs that Stuart says provide a “scaffolding” for the year (details below). In addition, club leaders plan unique events that cater to their local UVA communities. For example, Stuart attended a Boston club event at a Massachusetts cranberry bog. “There was one bog that was flooded with cranberries floating. You put on a pair of chest waders and walked out onto the bog with cranberries floating around you. It was a very unique opportunity,” he said.
The UVA Club of Atlanta recently organized an event where attendees met UVA basketball stars De’Andre Hunter and Malcolm Brogdon (Col ’15, Batten ’16) after an NBA game. Other local events center around community service projects; the New York and Boston clubs volunteer at their respective marathons.
Gathering to watch sports is a perennial winner as far as UVA Club events go. “There’s nothing better than getting together with Hoos to watch a game, no matter where you are,” Stuart said. UVA sports have even won over non-alums. Stuart recalls meeting five children of UVA graduates, four brothers and their soon-to-be-Hoo sister, at an admitted student celebration. Smitten, the brothers wished they too had gone to UVA. So they made a pact to attend every away Cavalier football game. “I’ve seen them at two pregame tailgates,” Stuart said. “The pure fandom, it’s awesome to see.”
Regardless of the event, the purpose is the same. “We’re getting people together to have a good time,” Stuart said. But it goes beyond that. It’s also about connecting. “Hoos just love Hoos,” he said.
The UVA network helps people connect socially, professionally, and personally. “You never know ‘Hoo’ you might connect with when attending a UVA Club event. If you go to a college and don’t use any of your network, you can get by of course, but you’re not getting the full squeeze out of that lemon,” Stuart said.
Admitted students hear from alumni and current students who share their experiences, offer advice, and answer questions about the UVA community.

It is a wonderful reminder that choosing UVA isn’t just choosing a university. You are joining a lifelong family that begins before move-in day and continues wherever life takes you.”
