Julia Hohenstein, of Brielle, New Jersey, is pursuing a double major in statistics and commerce. Bright and multifaceted, the third-year student divides her time between schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and a variety of community service initiatives.
As co-chair of the board of directors for Madison House—UVA’s volunteer center—Hohenstein helps steer the organization, planning for future initiatives, ensuring financial stability, and providing a student perspective. Prior to her board appointment, she served as a volunteer tutor.
For the past two years, Hohenstein has also participated in Alternative Spring Break, a program in which UVA students conduct charitable service projects in communities throughout the country. Thus far, she’s completed work in Portland, Oregon, and Death Valley, California.
After graduation, Hohenstein intends to pursue a master’s degree in hospital administration and ultimately sees herself working on the business side of a healthcare facility. “It’s the perfect mix,” she said. “I’m a numbers-oriented person, but I’ll also be helping people.”
Hohenstein is honored to have been named the 2017-18 recipient of the Gilbert J. Sullivan scholarship. “I’m incredibly touched by the Parents Fund’s willingness to invest in my education,” she said. “This amazing gift has inspired me to pursue service to an even greater degree. I promise to spend the rest of my time at UVA living up to this special honor.”
