More Than Numbers

It’s been a long, hot summer. But the advent of cooler, fall air signals the return of students to Grounds, bringing energy, excitement, and anticipation for the year ahead. The faculty and staff are equally invigorated and dedicated to educating these future leaders.

The facts and figures surrounding the University experience continue to impress:

  • Undergraduate admissions applications have increased by 60% since 2017.
  • The University was named the number one public school for financial aid four years in a row.
  • UVA has the best public university four-year graduation rate at 94%.
  • The average starting salary for graduates is $85,000 a year.
  • UVA is ranked the number four public university in the nation and the third best value of public universities.

But UVA is about much more than numbers. Here’s what some recent scholarship recipients had to say about their decision to attend UVA, their favorite part of life on Grounds, and their plans beyond Final Exercises.

I have lived in Charlottesville my entire life, so I have always been around UVA. I’ve long been interested in highway and traffic signal design, so I knew I wanted to study engineering. With the best engineering school in the Virginia right in my backyard, there was really no question where I was going to go.

Going to Portland, Maine, for my architecture studio trip has been my favorite activity. It helped me discover my love for landscape architecture, and I was able to learn about a topic that was completely new to me.

There was really no question where I was going to go.

Wrestling has been my favorite activity at UVA. Being part of the wrestling team has provided me with the opportunity to challenge myself physically and mentally, enhancing my discipline and resilience. This sport has not only allowed me to represent the University at a competitive level but also to form lasting friendships and learn invaluable life lessons under the guidance of dedicated coaches. The camaraderie and the intense training sessions are experiences that I treasure, making wrestling an integral part of my university life.

My favorite thing to do at UVA is meet new people, because the students here are both driven and kind. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about their goals has made me even more motivated to pursue my own. Although we come from many different backgrounds, that diversity has only deepened the sense of community I feel here. I have met people with experiences, perspectives and skills that have shaped the way I see the world and inspired me to grow in ways I never expected.

After I graduate, my plans are to teach English. I think teachers are transformative in many lives as people who teach us can help determine who we become. I value education, and I want the opportunity to change the lives of students. My goal is to instill a love for learning in everyone I teach.
