After six years, the University of Virginia has concluded the most ambitious capital campaign in its history. The Honor the Future Campaign, which raised more than $6 billion, was launched publicly in October 2019. The dates hold historical significance as 2019 marked the 200th anniversary of the state legislature providing the University its charter, and 2025 marked the 200th anniversary of the University’s first class of students who matriculated in 1825. The Honor the Future campaign reached its $5 billion goal in December 2023, more than 18 months ahead of schedule, and ended up surpassing its original number for a total of $6.1 billion in commitments by the end of June 2025.From the start, the campaign advanced priorities for every school and unit, supported new and existing programs, increased resources for students and faculty, and funded capital projects. It is abundantly clear that the Honor the Future campaign far exceeded even our highest expectations. That success is a direct result of the incredible generosity of hundreds of thousands of donors. The Honor the Future campaign helped us to define our dreams for excellence and our hopes for the next generation of leaders in our democracy. — Paul G. Mahoney, interim president By aiming squarely at strengthening core priorities and upholding an exceptional student experience, including investments in faculty, student access and affordability, the campaign achieved its greatest successes by attending to the most important participants in the life of a university; its people. The growth in two key areas—scholarships and faculty—showcases the campaign’s top priorities. Through the Bicentennial Scholars Fund, a matching program named in honor of UVA’s 200th anniversary, the University committed to a broad array of scholarships to provide financial security, educational opportunity and a solid foundation for its most promising students. Similarly, the University co-invested with donors to recruit and retain a faculty cohort of extraordinary scholars through the Bicentennial Professors Fund.A closer look at funds raised during the campaign reveals the depth of support for the University.Campaign gifts came from across the commonwealth, the nation and the world, with nearly all UVA schools and units surpassing their campaign goals. Gifts included thousands of small contributions, many large contributions and transformative, multimillion-dollar gifts. Over the course of the campaign, over 900 gifts of $1 million or more were made along with nearly 7,000 gifts of $100,000 or more. The start of the campaign saw an average of 25 gifts of $1 million, or greater, per year and 260 gifts of $100,000 or more. During its final fiscal year, it surpassed the highest total commitments in a single fiscal year, with more than $886 million recorded. The campaign received gifts from more than 258,000 unique-to-the-campaign donors. The Honor the Future campaign has provided the University of Virginia with the resources to sustain its foundational mission to prepare its students to become citizen-leaders and to serve the community, commonwealth and beyond. Now, at the dawn of its third century, UVA is well-positioned to assume a leadership role in determining the future of higher education.
