2018 Report on Philanthropy

Believe in Progress

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you for supporting the University of Virginia.

Universities ultimately rest on a fundamental belief in the idea of progress. To be sure, progress is rarely linear, often messy, and sometimes impossible to fully grasp in the moment. But to be a part of a university is to hold fast to the idea that progress is always possible.

That belief, more than anything, is what has defined UVA for 200 years.  And it is the same belief that should guide us as we think about what our future should look like.

Here you will see some of what makes me so hopeful about that future. There are stories about life-changing scholarships, life-saving medicine, promising research, and dedicated teaching—much of it made possible by UVA’s leaders in philanthropy.

With your help, I believe we can do even more in our third century to serve the commonwealth and beyond and advance the common good.  I look forward to continuing that journey together.

— President James E. Ryan
