A Place to Learn and Flourish

Green Gift: A Place to Learn & Flourish

It’s not
just a new building.

The Contemplative Commons is the University’s first contemporary building project explicitly designed for a new model of higher education—one dedicated to whole-student learning and flourishing.

Vital to that vision is understanding that integration—between academic learning and personal development, between mind and body, and between natural and built environments—is key to human health and well-being intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.

The building’s innovative and highly adaptable indoor spaces will accommodate both academic lectures and experiential workshops, small and large groups, quiet contemplation and physical activity. These areas will fully integrate with an extraordinary array of distinct outdoor spaces, including contemplative gardens, a large courtyard with enclosed trees, and the peaceful landscape of the adjacent Dell pond. A living green bridge will connect the Contemplative Commons to the main part of campus and the residential area.

Situated on Emmet Street, the Contemplative Commons will be within walking distance of eight UVA schools. Once complete, the space will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships across Grounds. Artistic performances, activities like dance and yoga, and networking opportunities will exist alongside teaching and research in an environment that facilitates academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular flourishing.

A $40 million lead gift from Paul Tudor Jones II (Col ’76) and Sonia M. Jones is funding part of the Commons, along with generous gifts from Jeffery Walker (McIntire ’77) and other CSC advisory board members and donors. The Contemplative Science Center is seeking additional gifts from alumni, parents, and friends to complete the remaining needs for the building.
