Aging With Grace

Carol Angle, M.D., is 90, lives independently, and—several mornings a week—rides her horse, Tigger. Angle is a renowned pediatric nephrologist and toxicologist who taught and conducted research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine for 45 years.

In 2016, Angle made a gift of $1 million to endow a faculty fund at UVA’s Center for Biomedical Ethics & Humanities, a program that teaches students and faculty how to care for patients holistically.

That fund helped recruit Justin Mutter, M.D. (Col ’03, Med ’13), a former Echols Scholar at UVA and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, to UVA’s Department of Geriatrics. He and Daniel Becker, M.D., have developed “Virginia at Home” (VaH), which aims to re-humanize care for homebound older adults in Central Virginia. In its three-year pilot phase, VaH will focus on adults with dementia whose goal is to remain at home. The idea resonated with Angle, who has given an additional $1.5 million to the program.

Angle is also a patron of the arts. In 2016, she created the $1 million Angle Exhibition Fund at The Fralin Museum of Art, the first endowed fund to support art exhibitions at the museum.

At the age of 90, obviously I'm interested in aging in place.
— Carol Angle, M.D.
